MUSEUM OF WESTERN ART GEARS UP FOR A BUSY 2018
The Museum of Western Art is celebrating its 35th anniversary with a busy 2018 that will feature craft days, Artist of the Month exhibitions, Family Free Days, “The Party: 35th Annual Art Sale and Exhibition”, a new website, and much more.
The museum’s Second Saturday Craft Day will be January 13th from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Youngsters will be able to create a variety of winter craft activities, including a fun-filled snowball fight. A snack is included in this free event. Please contact the museum’s Education Director, Darla Pfeister, at 210.296.1924, to register.
Artist of the Month for January is Travis Keese. Other artists to be featured in 2018 are Tom Paulson, Terry Donahue, C.S. Talley, Garnet Buster, Jennifer Hunter, Shirley Leago, Burneta Venosdel, Danny Stephens, and Jack Sorenson. These artists hail from all over Texas and the Southwest. Each month, a wine and cheese reception is held with a brief talk by the artist about his or her work and inspiration. These events are complimentary for museum members; a suggested donation of $10 for non-members is welcome.
The last Saturday of every month is Family Free Day for Kerr County families. January’s Family Free Day will feature a special book signing by Kerrville’s very own “Cowgirl Peg,” from 2-4 pm. Peg Sundberg is the author of the “Cowgirl Peg Book Series” that includes seven wonderful children’s books which are written at an elementary school level. The series combines the author’s love of horses and dogs with powerful character-building messages. Beautifully illustrated by artist Pat Wiles, the books are nationally endorsed and highly recommended by parents, young readers, educators and counselors. Friendship, kindness and respect are universal messages in the books. “Cowgirl Peg” will be accompanied by her dog Harley, and a German Shepherd therapy dog named Ty, of Grey Shepherd Training Academy. Also on January 27, the Remuda – the museum’s dedicated volunteer group – will have a cookie sale which is a fundraiser for the museum.
On Saturday, April 7, the museum will open “Imprinting the West: Manifest Destiny, Real and Imagined.” The exhibition features 48 hand-colored engravings and lithographs by artists such as Frederic Remington, Charles Bird King and George Catlin. The traveling exhibition will be on view through May 26, 2018.
The museum’s annual “Party: Art Sale and Exhibition” will be held on Saturday, September 15, 2018. This is the major fundraiser for the museum, as it provides crucial operating support. Bart Jones, co-chair of the event, said, “Our 2017 event was very successful with a great turnout; we hope everyone will put the date on their calendar and plan to purchase quality artwork by some of today’s best Western artists.”
In addition to all of these activities, Summer Camp for youth will be held June 5-8, 2018, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The museum also has a new website that just launched. Judith Miller of Glaze Designs has worked hard to design the website. The new website features the ability to buy a membership online with Museum Store merchandise purchasing coming soon.
Finally, the museum has added a new face to its Board of Directors. Laura Fore, owner/broker of Fore Premier Properties, has joined the Board. With numerous credits and accolades to her name, Laura joins the other stellar Board members which include: Melissa Hoelscher; Bart Jones; Bob Fairchild; Jerry Atkinson; Andy Bachofen; David Lackey; Mark Nelson; and Karol Schreiner.
The award-winning Museum of Western Art is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Guided tours are available. For more information, please call 896.2553.
