DANNY STEPHENS IS ARTIST OF THE MONTH AT MUSEUM OF WESTERN ART

Danny, a native Texan, began training horses for the public at age 13. After graduating from Sam Houston State University with a degree in Agricultural Education, Danny chose to train horses rather than children. Today, at age 65, he still actively trains roping horses. It was through his day to day interactions with horses that Danny developed such a keen eye for equine anatomy. In 1977, while competing at the World Championship Quarter Horse Finals in Oklahoma City, Danny began his journey into the world of contemporary western bronzes. After harshly criticizing the work of others, Danny’s wife Jimmie finally dared him to do better, going so far as to provide him with the clay so that he could either “put up or shut up!” Danny cast his first bronze in 1978 and has been active since. Each piece he creates belongs to a limited edition series of only ten pieces.
