UNIVERSITY, MUSEUM PARTNER ON DIGITIZATION PROJECT

The Museum of Western Art is partnering with Schreiner University’s Visual Arts Department on a project to digitize and archive the Museum’s collection of slides. The project is funded through the Dean’s Scholarship program and will last through the spring semester.

Judy Hultquist, Museum Chairperson of the Griff Carnes Research Center, said, “The Museum has approximately 10,000 slides in storage that date back to 1983 when the Museum opened. The slides are primarily photos of paintings, prints, sculptures and artifacts exhibited over the years and special events such as the Museum’s grand opening and artist receptions. The goal of this project with Schreiner is to ensure the future of this collection. Digitization of the slides will minimize precious storage space at the Museum and provide a format that allows this collection to be available to Museum library users.”

Marcia Rae McCulley, Professor of Visual Arts at Schreiner University, found funding and equipment for the project.  She also arranged for Schreiner student Brittany Walters to scan the slides for the project. Brittany is a sophomore science major from Mission, Texas.

Professor McCulley said, “Brittany and I will prepare and present a report about this project at the Student Achievement Showcase event in April.”
